From the Editor’s Desk
By David Houck
It is hard to believe that THE dream Donald Capps had in 1958, the establishment of the Aurora Center for the Blind, now known as the Federation Center of the Blind, would come to fruition on October 15, 1961. Dr. Capps was an organizational builder in many aspects. This 51 by 36 foot structure WAS used by the blind for meetings and events as a recreational and educational Center both LOCALLY and statewide. It cost $20,000 to BUILD and $5,000 to furnish back then. In 1970 the facility size was doubled and later tripled its original size in 1979. Staffing grew over the years in direct proportion to match the growth of the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina (NFB of SC). Parking was added in 1980 and doubled in 1988. The Federation Center of the Blind hosted and participated in lobbying for legislative issues, hosting annual statewide seminars, hosting leadership seminars, presenting technology and career workshops, hosting 67 Columbia Chapter annual barbecue dinner fundraisers, local Columbia Chapter meetings, and so much more. Today, in addition to a continuing three year renovation of the center, we are involved with assistive technology training, both in person and virtually, ZOOM meetings, and fundraising to provide and train blind people to use adaptive medical devices. To celebrate the accomplishments of the Federation Center, on Friday, October 15 between 12 noon and 2 p.m. we will hold an Open House at the Federation Center. Please RSVP by calling the Center at 803-254-3777 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. There will be a brief program, tours, exhibits and catered items will be available.
If you would like to have your name published in the 60th anniversary booklet as a sponsor, please send a donation to the Federation Center. Two suggested amounts are $600 ($10 for each year) or $60 ($1 for each year). Checks can be made payable to, “Federation Center of the Blind.” Mark them for 60th anniversary fund and mail them to

These sponsorships will help defray expenses for the event. We request that sponsorships be submitted by October 1. All are welcome to attend, but please RSVP the Center by October 1. We will have 60th anniversary print and braille booklets available at the center. The information will also be listed on the nfbofsc.org web site.
ONE MINUTE MESSAGE:
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want: blindness is not what holds you back.
