Children’s Camp

 

Rocky Bottom Children’s Camp of the Blind will be held June 9-16, 2019 at 123 Hancock Road, Sunset, SC 29685. Legally blind children ages 6-16 are welcome to attend this week-long camp in upstate South Carolina.

 

Campers will experience Braille, cane travel, technology, independent living skills, as well as, self-advocacy and career readiness activities. In the past, campers have gone bowling, horseback riding, hiking, swimming, and kayaking.

 

What makes this camp uniquely special is that the director, counselors in training, counselors and other volunteers are blind, in order to provide campers with positive blind role models.

2019 National Convention

 

Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino at duskThe largest gathering of blind people in the world, the National Federation of the Blind National Convention is the premier event for training, support, and information for the blind community. It also serves as a governing body, democratically electing our leadership and establishing the year’s organizational priorities.

 

Dates

 

The 2019 National Convention will take place Sunday, July 7 through Friday, July 12, 2019.

 

Location

 

For the first time in seven years, the convention will be held west of the Mississippi at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada (3950 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, Nevada 89119).

 

Situated at the beginning of the world-famous Las Vegas strip, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino is the perfect location for enjoying as much or as little of the strip as you want.

 

It has more than two dozen restaurants and activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Among its features is an aquatic playground called Mandalay Bay Beach which has real sand, a wave pool, and rentable cabanas. The hotel is also home to an aquarium with more than 2,000 animals including sharks, green sea turtles, and a Komodo dragon. Plus, it offers top-notch entertainment including Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil.

 

Hotel Reservations

 

Room reservations at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino can be made starting January 1, 2019. You can call the hotel at 877-632-9001 to book your room. The hotel will take a deposit of the first night’s room rate for each room and will require a credit card or a personal check. If you use a credit card, the deposit will be charged against your card immediately. If a reservation is cancelled before Saturday, June 1, 2019, half of the deposit will be returned. Otherwise, refunds will not be made.

 

For NFB convention attendees, the nightly rate for singles, doubles, triples, and quads will be $99. Hotel taxes are 13.38 percent and sales tax is 8.25 percent.

 

The resort fee (normally $37 a night) will be waived for NFB convention attendees. However, fees for internet access, local and toll-free calls, and fitness center access may apply.

You can now begin to make your hotel reservations for the 2019 NFB of SC State Convention which will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Columbia August 9-11.  Room rates are very affordable.  Rates for this year’s convention are $112 per night for up to four in a room.  In addition to the room rates there will be a tax, which at present is 14 percent.  The deadline to make reservations will be July 15, 2019.  There will also be a limited number of rooms available for the $112 rate on Thursday, August 8, for those individuals wanting to arrive to the hotel a day prior to the official start of the convention.  You can make your room reservations by calling the Marriott toll free reservation telephone number (800) 593-6465 or (803) 771-7000 and inform the reservationist you are reserving a room for the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina state convention.  At this year’s state convention, , we will be celebrating the seventy-fifth anniversary of our organization.  We are planning activities throughout the weekend to commemorate this wonderful milestone.  We are expecting a large turnout for this convention so you may want to make your hotel reservations early.  This will be a very special and historic convention you do not want to miss!
